One of the goals of your Christian life should be to see Jesus clearly. 1 John 3:2 and 3:6 give two great benefits of seeing Jesus clearly.
First, in 1 John 3:2, John mentions that while those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ are children of God, they do not yet appear as what they will be. However, when Jesus comes again, they will be like Jesus. The reason for this great change — they will see Jesus just as He is.
John then exhorts everyone who has this hope to purify themselves as Jesus is pure. This tells me that while we will not achieve perfect Christlikeness until He comes again, we can become more Christlike as we see Him in the Bible. The more His grace shines into our lives from the pages of Scripture, the more we will reflect Him.
Second, in 1 John 3:6 we are told that the one who keeps sinning (i.e. sin is the consistent practice and character of their life) has not seen Jesus. While John would not say that the one who has seen Jesus never sins (see 1 John 1:8-2:1), he does indicate in this verse that the one who has seen Jesus will not be characterized by continual sinning. So, seeing Jesus is one of the things that keeps us from sin.
Why does seeing Jesus keep us from sin? When we begin to see and treasure the all satisfying beauty of Jesus, we will not desire the passing pleasure of sin. We never turn from the thing we consider most valuable for something less.
Let’s pray that God will open our eyes to the beauty, majesty and glory of Jesus. Let’s pray that He will allow us to see Jesus clearly so that we might purify ourselves, turn from sin and become more like the Lord we love.
