Here is what John Brown of Wamphray (c.1610-1679) had to say about sinners accepting Jesus:
It is true that Christ is offered to sinners as such. But though the deadest sinner, the proudest Pharisee, the greatest justiciary, or self-righteous legalist, is under obligation to accept of Christ, yet remaining such, will not accept of Christ and his righteousness, but must first be brought off the false selfish ground they now stand upon, and quit grips of their own righteousness.
His point is that a sinner will not accept Christ, unless God first gives the gift of spiritual life and faith.
