How not to be a Heretic

November 6, 2006

I ran across this quote from Martyn Lloyd Jones on heretics and heresy:

“The heretics were never dishonest men; they were mistaken men.  They should not be thought of as men who were deliberately setting out to go wrong and to teach something that is wrong; they have been some of the most sincere men that the Church has ever known.  What was the matter with them? Their trouble was this: they evolved a theory and they were rather pleased with it; then they went back with this theory to the Bible, and they seemed to find it everywhere.” — Martyn Lloyd Jones, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, p.7

This is wise advice on how to study the Bible.  We must be very careful to not read our favorite ideas or theories into the text.  Instead, we must be careful to learn what God meant when He inspired the text.

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,  accurately handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

An Old Key to Church Growth

November 2, 2006

Here is a quote from Martyn Lloyd Jones on the best means of evangelism:

what the Church needs to do is not to organize evangelistic campaigns to attract outside people, but to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings. They would say, ‘What is the secret of this?

Brothers and sisters, if we want to advance the kingdom of God, we must live holy lives. We must cultivate lifestyles of humble dependence on Jesus, loving God and loving others in the power of the Holy Spirit. We must become the people that Jesus describes in Matthew 5:3-12.
